In the upper part of the historical centre, the monumental Candlestick tower stands out the town, together with the Sienese fortress and the fortified Cassero (donjon) building. The Candlestick Tower was built in 1228 by the Free Municipality of Massa Marittima as sighting tower.
The present- day tower is the result of the conquer of Massa Marittima by the Sienese in 1335, who shortened it by one third and built an arch to connect it to the Sienese fortress: the impressiveness of this military building is still now intact and really spectacular.
